Arabic as a Foreign Language Program (AFL): Arabic Courses
Upon enrollment, students must undergo a Placement Test to determine the level of proficiency .p.s. (Teaching Materials are being updated and reconstructed to meet the new structure of the levels.)

The AFL Program also offers courses in the Jordanian spoken dialect. Conversational Arabic courses may explore similarities and differences with the vocabulary and grammar of Modern Standard Arabic, and prepare students for spoken interaction in all areas of daily life. Conversational Arabic classes can be offered at high levels and can be tailored to meet a specific thematic focus.
Short-term intensive courses in Fus’ha (i.e. Standard Arabic) and/or colloquial Arabic for a period of one to five weeks can be arranged upon request to meet the specific language needs of foreign learners.
*** Colloquial Arabic could be taught in all levels to help students communicate with people in the community (1-2 hours per week).
*** Other arrangements can be made to meet the level and the needs of the students.

Students should pay the fees in Jordanian Dinars (JD) in cash at the Dept. of Finance. The option to pay in US Dollar is also available, but this should be done through the Cairo-Amman Bank located on campus. Please note that the bank charges both the student and the University for this service. Note: fees are non-refundable.
The deadline for registration for regular students (i.e., not subject to special agreements) is the first week of the relevant semester. Please contact the Language Center for more information at languages.cen@yu.edu.jo.

- Photocopy of the passport (pages with the personal information and the entry date).
- A copy of the most recent academic degree
Students’ ID cards will be issued to the students at the Language Center upon the completion of the registration process.
The Language Center is fully equipped with the-state-of-the-art facilities, including:
- Modern classrooms and teaching aids
- Audio/video language labs
- Computer labs, internet-equipped, with dedicated Arabic resource
- Access to University services, halls, clubs, and library during business hours as well as opportunities for participation in sports, parties, exhibitions and art
Yarmouk University can secure appropriate accommodations on campus. Apartments are furnished and usually assigned to University staff, but, if available, they can be assigned to international students. Further information about on campus housing is available in the following table:

No food is provided in any of the residence halls and the accommodation fee does not cover the cost of meals. However, cafeterias and cafes near campus provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner at a reasonable price.

All international air flights arrive at Queen Alia International Airport, which is 35 km. south of Amman, the capital of Jordan. You can reach Irbid directly by taxi (50.50 JD) (Tel: (06) 4451074, Mob.: 0797075347) or you can reach Amman by Sariyah Express Bus (Tel: 0776799001). The bus leaves the airport to the North Bus Station every 30 minutes from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and every hour from 4.00 p.m. to 8.00 a.m. The airport bus fare is about (3.30 JD).
If you take the bus you can get off at any place you like on the route. The last bus stop station is at TABARBOR-the North Transportation Station, which is the central bus service station to the northern parts of Jordan. From this station, you can take a bus to Irbid, which is about 90 km. north of Amman. There is no specific schedule for the bus to Irbid, but usually these buses run from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The bus fare is about (2.25 JD).
Special arrangements to pick you up from the airport can be made for students who come through official agreements.
The Cost of Living in Jordan
To cover the expenses of accommodation, meals and pocket money, one needs about $550 per month.
The Weather
Summer in Jordan is dry and warm. The average high temperature for the summer (June- August) ranges between 31-33 C. Winter in Jordan is relatively cold. The average high temperature for the winter (November-March) ranges between 10-17 C. However, winter is warm in other areas in the country such as Aqaba and The Jordan Valley.
Weekend
The weekend in Jordan is Friday, for public institutions. However, for the University, it is Friday and Saturday.
Students can benefit from the health insurance provided by the University. The University Health Center provides services for insured students free of charge. Non-insured students will be treated at their own expense.
The Language Center arranges field trips to students according to the available timeframe and the weather conditions. Important historical and archaeological sites such as Umm Qais (Roman Gadara), Jerash, Amman, the Dead Sea, the Jordan Valley, Aqaba and Petra, are easily accessible from Irbid. Students will have ample opportunities to visit these and other places of interest during the two Program-sponsored educational excursions, on weekends, and during the mid-session break.
